The Coplas Sefardies are a collection of Judeo-Spanish songs for voice and piano composed by Alberto Hemsi (1898 - 1975) from tunes and pieces of Spanish poetry. The various elements of the collection were brought together by Hemsi in Sefardi communities of the Ottoman Empire. Between 1924 and 1937, Hemsi collected 230 poems....the holder of numerous international awards and a well known musician, Hemsi left a vast array of musical works, often unpublished and of exceptional quality: a number of pieces for voice and piano, for choir, for one or two pianos, for violin or cello and piano, and various ensembles and orchestral works. In 1985, Allegra Benoun Hemsi, entrusted the singer Pedro Aledo with her fathers 10 notebooks of Coplas Sefardies. A detailed booklet of 36 pages--in English, Spanish, and French--containing more on Hemsi and his music with lyrics and translations of the songs is included.
