Consisting of 2 CDs and 138 page hard cover booklet, in Hebrew and English, Mokum is one of the most beautiful and important inclusions in the Hatikvah Music catalog. The first CD, in this set, Pre-War Recordings, was originally issued in Holland as ÒHazzanut in Pre-War Jewish AmsterdamÓ with the Choir of The Great Synagogue in Amsterdam. The Choir, was led by Choirmaster Samuel Henri Englander between 1916 and 1942. Throughout these years the composition of the choir, a male double-quartet, hardly changed. The selections on this disc include 2 selections of a live broadcast from Amsterdam by the American NBC Radio network in 1939. The 16 selctions on this CD were recorded between 1929 and 1940...13 liturgical pieces and 3 in Yiddish. Of all the members of the Choir, featured in various photographs in the book, only one survived The War.The second CD in the set, recorded between 1913 and 1947, features various soloist cantors. Curiously, one of the soloists on this CD, Joseph Rabbie--who was also a member of The Choir-- is credited on the original 1924 Odeon Records label as Jo Rabbie Jr., Church Singer! As with the performers on CD #1, only one Hazzan on this CD, Benzion Moskovits, survived The War.This 2 CD with 138 page hard cover bookin Hebrew and English contains detailed history of the Ashkenazi Amsterdam community as well as biographical information on the soloists and Choir members with many photographs. Highly recommended!
